
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actress and singer whose career spanned over 40 years. London was a torch singer who was known for her smooth, soft vocals. She recorded more than 30 albums of standards and jazz between 1955 and 1969. Her recording of "Cry Me a River" that she introduced on her debut album was included in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition to receiving a musical notice, London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her portrayal of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa, California to vaudevillian parents. She began her acting career in Los Angeles as an actress. London's 35-year acting career began with film in 1944 which included roles for female leads in several westerns. She starred along with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and together with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-1950s she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional career. In 1969 she released her final studio album. However, she continued to be a star in television's Emergency show in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) In the show, she played alongside her husband Bobby Troup.
