Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. Feminist Frequency was established by Sarkeesian. The website hosts videos featuring commentary and analysis of the representations of women that are prevalent in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. She is the author and director of executive for Feminist Frequency which is an education non-profit website that explores representations of women in pop media narratives. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her work. In addition, Sarkeesian explores the issue of specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups that have been left out. With a master's in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university she became fascinated by the issue of gender and rights for women in the early stages. It was a girl with a dream to develop a series of web videos to examine the gender representations in games. However, she became the victim of online harassment. The attack did not stop her, rather it strengthened her determination as a feminist critic of media. To honor the numerous accomplishments she's made to feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes.
